Yamashiro Koyomi has failed the teacher employment exam so many times she is on the verge of giving up. Then notice arrives: she has passed. The school that hired her is in the fictional 48th prefecture of Japan—a training school for inexperienced UMA (unidentified mysterious animals). Koyomi has accidentally sat the animal trainer exam, not the teacher exam. The school's principal offers her a deal: work admirably for a year and he will recommend her to other high schools. She has no training in handling UMA. She accepts anyway.
