In present-day Japan, magic is studied alongside theology and science as a legitimate academic discipline—but access to its practice is restricted based on personal character, and requires formal specialization. Dedicated magic schools exist to meet that need. At the one Takashi attends, an oral tradition of "Seven Wonders" stories has passed from senior students to junior for generations. Takashi and his friends gradually discover that the legends conceal something the school has kept quiet for a long time: the true mysteries underneath the myths.
