Four years after EPISODE 3. The operator Xiera revives the player from stasis to escort a new recruit named Hitsugi—a boy, seemingly, with suspected ties to fake ARKS infiltrators. During the mission, a black mass attacks and Hitsugi vanishes before the player can stabilize the situation. The truth surfaces quickly: Hitsugi is a teenage girl on Earth playing the video game PSO2, and the boy is a construct named Aru who appeared in her apartment bearing her avatar's face. She names him Aru and takes him home. The player is dispatched to Earth, where a parallel form of photons called Ether powers both technology and the emotional fears of the general public—fears that manifest as creatures called Phantoms. The corporation that made PSO2 is a front for a group of Ether-sensitives called Mother Cluster. The player, Hitsugi, and her brother Enga work against Mother Cluster across the globe. During a Las Vegas attack, Hitsugi is killed—awakening Aru's dormant Dark Falz power, which revives her. Mother Cluster captures her to use as a vector to attack the ARKS Ship. After the ship is defended, Mother—Mother Cluster's leader—absorbs Aru and flees to the Moon. Pursuing her, the heroes learn that Mother is a failed clone of Xion, discarded by the Photoners, seeking vengeance on them. They defeat her and begin to redeem her—but Ardem Sacred, leader of the Earth Guides, kills and absorbs Mother to advance his own plan: triggering the next stage of human evolution through Ether. The heroes follow Ardem to Yggdrasil. He strips them of their Ether abilities and expels the player back to the Oracle dimension. Mother's remnant consciousness within Aru brings the player back to Earth, restores the heroes' powers, and the combined force defeats Ardem.
