One thousand years after the collapse of contemporary society, humanity is gone. In the post-apocalyptic world of Illayla, sparse primitive tribes cling to scavenged technology they treat as sacred relics. Their survival is threatened by the Blackzones — abandoned, bountiful territories overrun by machine creatures called Demons. The last surviving human wakes with no memory and a sprightly AI in his head that cannot tell the difference between people and computers. Alongside a temperamental husky named Loken, he must train to become a Blackrunner and navigate the Blackzones to discover who — or what — he truly is.
