Nick Cawthon, son of Scott Cawthon, returns to his childhood home more than a decade after an incident that ended the Five Nights at Freddy's series and destroyed his family. His friend Tobias has repaired the house. What Nick recounts is this: a man named Michael broke in one night, claiming to have lost all memory. Nick, still a child at the time, persuaded his father to let Michael stay. Scott and Nick's mother Val stayed awake to keep watch. Michael's voice warned Val over a speaker to survive until six in the morning and leave with the children. She realized too late that something was wrong. Scott, investigating separately, hallucinated and found a note. He survived until morning and went to the basement where his children were hiding—then was struck from behind and lost consciousness. When the camera shifted to Michael's perspective, he was in a basement toilet, following instructions from monitors to escape. Later, Scott woke in a chair, with Michael revealing himself to be Mike Schmidt, the night guard from the first Five Nights at Freddy's. Mike explained that the animatronics had escaped Scott's fiction into the real world and needed Scott's body to maintain their physical form. The house burned. Scott did not survive. The Joy of Creation: Story Mode is a FNAF fan game telling the end of Scott Cawthon's story from within the world his games created.
