Emil, a traveling merchant, has managed to convince the entire people of Aspo that their ruling dynasty is secretly allied with dark forces. The only one who can expose and stop him is the heir to the throne—Robert—who has spent the last three years turned to stone. Newly un-petrified and armed mostly with enthusiasm and no real plan, Robert sets out on the mission accompanied by Peck, his loyal but flightless bird, and Laura, a rebel who can genuinely fly but mostly does so off the handle.
