Twenty years ago, crackling orange rifts opened over Earth and spilled violent, technically advanced machines onto the surface. Humans exposed to the rifts developed radiation sickness — a small percentage of survivors found they could absorb alien technology through what became known as Rift Resonance. These Attuned built powerful armatures and helped humanity fight back until scientists finally closed the rifts ten years later. With the war over, the United Protectorate ordered all armatures decommissioned. But for many Attuned, the armature is inseparable from the body. The resulting fracture split them into three factions: the Villains, who violently resist decommissioning under former war hero Specter; the Heroes, loyal to their governments and tasked with policing the other factions; and the Independents, who reject both Specter's extremism and the Protectorate's overreach, navigating their own path in a world that has no straightforward place for them.
