The prince of Griffinvale married a poor girl against his father's wishes. The king sent him away on a crusade and drove the wife out of the castle in his absence—expecting the prince would forget her in time. He died in battle instead. The wife bore a child and died in confinement. The king, left without an heir and consumed by grief, sank into mourning while his court filled with ambition and conspiracy.
