After the collapse and escape from the Solitude Fortress, the Cosmic Goombas have seized Mario's vacation island. He needs to leave his comfort zone, explore Indigo Island, and close the rift to the Cosmic Dimension that they opened. As for where Bowser fits into all of this — that remains to be seen.
