A village with no history of witches watches that change when the king and queen welcome a daughter named Laura. Years pass peacefully until bandits invade the castle — two are caught, but one takes young Laura hostage. When he threatens her, she does not scream or beg. White light emanates from her body. He releases her and flees. She floats. The incident costs the king and queen their lives in the chaos that follows. Laura is left alone, orphaned, different, and slowly coming to understand what she is.
