The Country of Spades is at war with itself, divided into four territories: White, Black, the Hatter Mansion, and The Station. Every zone is dangerous. Alice arrived here under circumstances that cost her all of her memories — saved from drowning in a lake, she emerged with no recollection of anyone she knew or anything that made her who she was. The people she meets feel somehow familiar, though she cannot account for why. In a country where the hatter is the mafia and gun violence is routine, Alice builds new relationships despite the discomfort of not knowing herself. Whether a genuine romance is possible for a realist protagonist in this unconventional world is the central question.
