Calluna

Ole Bull was a Norwegian violinist and composer who became one of the defining performing artists of the nineteenth century. A child prodigy who made his public solo debut at nine years old, he went on to build an enormous reputation and a substantial fortune, composing more than seventy works — though only around ten survive in known form today. He was deeply engaged with the Norwegian romantic nationalist movement and its vision of an independent Norway, took inspiration from the fjords and mountains of the Norwegian landscape, and in 1852 attempted to establish a Norwegian colony in Pennsylvania that did not succeed as planned. Calluna — the common heather — was his favorite flower.
