In the year 2112, the colonization of Proxima B led to the discovery of Proximium — an element found in the moon's crust with the unique property of distorting the space-time continuum. Years of research have turned that property into a functional teleportation device: the Materializer-ZX, capable of moving small non-living objects across space-time in seconds. The Moon Base team is working to scale the technology to humans. Bremner is an engineer at the base — the person called when scientists break or lose things — who is outside the base one morning with his senior colleague Mortimer, inspecting unusual mineral deposits on the surface, when Lt. Katie Swain's voice arrives in his earpiece. A Materializer-ZX in his pocket has, up until now, been useful mainly for not walking to the canteen.
