Synthetic Lover

In 2066, biologically engineered humanoids called biots make up a substantial share of the global workforce. The protagonist is one of them — designed to serve as a companion in an adult entertainment establishment known as the Dollhouse. Biots have no access to their own self-awareness or free will by design; they exist as inert dolls between activations. That is how his days have always gone. Then he crosses paths with a thief carrying a device that should not exist — and something changes.
