The Dark Dwellers

The Mortali was taken as a child and raised in a pit — a decrepit underground city where death is not a permanent state, and the prisoners who live there are trapped in an endless cycle of killing and being killed until madness takes them. He has grown up in this environment and is now the newest member of the Dark Dwellers, a ragtag group attempting to find a way to end the cycle permanently. The alternative is the Maddening Curse — wandering the pit's darkness forever, with no self left to want otherwise.
